Why is Reading So Important for Children?

This is a collaborative post

The positive effects that regular reading has on children is astonishing, as proven by a multitude of studies and professional research. Not only does reading help develop a child’s understanding of the world around them by expanding on their cultural and historical awareness, but it can also help them develop a wider vocabulary. What’s more, reading is great for helping children wind down and relax by transporting them to a world entirely different from their own. I have teamed up with an independent school in Richmond.

Reading Helps with Communication Skills

As reading allows children to learn new words and become more familiar with different sentence structures, they become better communicators. This is true in both the written and verbal sense. Their expanded general knowledge also helps provide them with different talking points when meeting new people, so reading is great for socialisation.

Reading Encourages Empathy

When children read about characters who have experienced different hardships to their own, they develop a sense of empathy. They put themselves into the shoes of someone else and consider how their life experiences shape their emotions. Again, this is another reason why reading supports a child’s social development and allows them to build stronger relationships.

Reading Boosts Concentration

By regularly delving into a good book, children learn to sit still and engage in something for longer periods of time. Essentially, it boosts their concentration skills, which is great from an academic perspective and will support their education.

Generally speaking, reading is a fantastic habit. However, like all habits, it will need regularity in order to establish itself and the earlier you start, the better. With that said, be sure to take your youngster down to the library from time to time so that they can pick out a good book to enjoy in their spare time.
