How to raise a resilient child

This is a collaborative post

As a parent, it is important to do your best to help your child navigate their way through the trials and tribulations of daily life. Children nowadays suffer from a number of stresses such as school, friends, body image and the future.

Whilst you may not be able to remove the problems from your child’s life, you can teach them how to cope and come up with solutions to resolve them. Below is some advice from this online private school on how to raise a resilient child.

Be optimistic

In order for your child to see things positively, you need to be optimistic around them. Regular interactions with your child can help them pick up basic social skills, that can aid them when it comes to interacting with their peers. If you show your child that through difficulties, you can still be positive and pull through, they too will learn to do the same.

Allow them to fail

There is no doubt that you would do anything for your child to help them succeed. Taking the hit for them when things go wrong can also be part of this. However, it is important to encourage your child to try new things and step out of their comfort zone.

Not only will this provide them with a great learning curve, but it will teach them that failing a few times does not mean the end. This doesn’t mean you should encourage failure but allow your child to stumble sometimes, to help them realise that getting back up only makes them stronger.

Help them manage their emotions

Teach your child that all emotions are okay to feel, even the big scary ones. It doesn’t mean that there is room to throw tantrums for no reason, but to feel emotions and talk them through. As children learn to manage their emotions, they will also become a lot more resilient.
