Challenge your child in different ways
Following the same tasks you ask of your child just means they get used to what they need to do, which can show that they are comfortable in handling what comes their way. Instead, you should be showing your child how to handle themselves in different scenarios. If they look comfortable, it’s time to change it up so that they are kept on their toes.
Show your child how to fail
That doesn’t mean your child should feel bad about making an error of judgement or making a mess, it’s about showing them that it’s very human to make a mistake. Make many mistakes in front of them and show how you would react to the problem, as well as fixing it.
They can be as simple as dropping milk on the floor and having to clean it up, or it could be a disagreement between you and another person where you have to accept fault. No matter the known complexity of an issue it’s important not to “dumb down” what you’re trying to explain to your child.
Make your child feel proud of their flaws
If we were all born perfect then fewer issues would ever occur and we wouldn’t even need to know how to solve any problems ever! If your child knows about their flaws, and we all have them, then they can feel a lot more comfortable in handling particular issues. They can also become aware of their limits – if something is making your child uncomfortable they will know how to avoid it for the future.
