Supplies needed for the smoky eye effect
- eyeshadow primer
- angled eyeshadow brush
- 2 shadows (one dark, one light)
- black or charcoal mascara
- black eyeliner (depending on what color of shadow you choose)
Prepare your eyes
As any good artist knows, before creating any work of beauty, you must prepare your canvas. Apply primer in a sweeping motion to the lid of the eye. This helps prevent the eye shadow from clumping into those little lines that appear right at the crease of the eye.
Using your liner
Line both the top and bottom rims of the eye with an eye pencil.
There can be a little variation at this point, depending on the size of your eyes and the look you want to achieve. For example, only the lining part of the top and bottom rims can leave your eyes looking more “open” for those who desire a less dramatic look. This is a very popular method in a lot of today’s leading fashion magazines.

The length of the eye pencil line may vary depending on your particular tastes and the look you desire. It is suggested that you do not take the eye pencil line past the outer corner of the eye (leave that work area for the eye shadow).

Applying the eye shadow
With the angled eyeshadow brush, smudge the edge of the eye pencil line. This will create a smooth transition between the liner and the eye shadow once you start applying the colour.
Take the dark-coloured shadow and apply it to the lash line where you applied the eye pencil. Be sure to smudge this area well for a nice smokey, blended-together look. This dark shadow can be kept just around the eyes or can be extended to the crease of the eye, depending on how dramatic you want your look.
Now enhance that bright eye look by applying the lighter shadow (preferably white, light gold, or another similar light shade) to the inner corner of the eye, working on blending it into the darker shadow. You may also apply the lighter shadow just below the eyebrow to highlight your brow bone.
