Moving house is notoriously expensive but it does not have to be. There are so many ways you can save money but you may not even know those yet. Here I want to share with you easy ways to save money moving house and make it easy for you and your family at the same time.
Removal costs
This is one cost you can not easily avoid unless you happen to own a van! If you avoid removal companies but instead search for “man with a van London cheap” you are sure to find the best removal companies for your budget. Man with van companies are just as good as conventional removal companies but often cheaper! As long as they have the correct insurances and good reviews you should be ok.
Pack what you can yourself. It is cheaper than paying someone to pack your belongings and you will know where to find everything and that all your belongings are safe and secure.
Packaging materials
Instead of buying any new boxes and packaging materials, you should ask online on Facebook groups for your local area, Freecycle and other similar groups to find someone who has spare boxes after their house move. Shops can also be a great source of packaging materials and are often happy to save them for you if you ask in plenty of time before they have deliveries.
Remember to use anything you have to pack around too, cushions and pillows can be great to pack around ornaments! Teddies are great around children’s toys to stop them bashing around and breaking.
Online conveyancing solicitors
When we recently moved house we found that the online conveyancing solicitors were massively cheaper than the local firms. They offer the same service and are legally registered to provide this service you are just getting it cheaper! Let’s face it £200 saved is better in your pocket!
Take meter readings
Ensure when you move into your new house and out of your old house you take meter readings of all the meters, ideally with photos showing them. This will ensure you are not paying for the previous occupant’s utilities but also that the new occupiers of your previous home pay for anything after you have moved. It may not sound much but a week extra of these bills can be huge, especially in the current climate with increased costs of living!
