A willingness to learn doesn’t come naturally to all children, but it’s something that parents can try and encourage to help promote academic success. Learning isn’t limited to the classroom and by showing your child that learning can be fun, you will help put them on the right path. Here are some tips from a private school in Somerset on how to motivate your child to learn.

Demonstrate an Enthusiasm for Learning
Your own attitude will rub off on your child, so demonstrating enthusiasm towards learning is one great way to motivate them. Let them see how passionate you are about certain topics and show them how joyful it can be to uncover new information. Essentially, the trick is to be a good role model.
Find Opportunities to Learn
Try and turn every day into a learning day in one way or another. Encourage your child to help you out with the gardening or the cooking and use it as an opportunity to teach them new skills. Ask them open-ended questions so that they learn to think about things on a deeper level.
Focus on Your Child’s Interests
Your child will feel more eager to learn if the subject actually fascinates them. With that said, you should encourage your child to pursue their interests either at home or via an extra-curricular club. Talk to them about their hobbies and try and challenge them where possible. For instance, if they like dinosaurs, ask them to come up with their five favourite dinosaurs and explain why they like them.
Concentrate on the Journey, Not the Result
Putting too much emphasis on your child’s grades will intimidate them and perhaps make them shy away from their education. Instead, you should concentrate on their academic journey, rather than their results. For example, rather than asking them what grade they got on their maths homework, ask them what they learnt about in maths. Show them that a willingness to learn is more important than grades and that as long as they try their best you will be proud of them.
