Starting your own business is a big decision and one that we often go into without quite realising what it all entails. One of the biggest things that business owners tell us is that they didn’t know it would take up so much time. Small business owners often take on everything themselves & this means that it eats into all of their spare time – and while the sacrifice is often worth it to ensure your business grows, there are better ways. Whether you are running a shop, a blog or any other kind of business you need to save time where you can.

Get Organised
One of the best things you can do is get organised – set up spreadsheets, become best friends with a calendar app & really get to grips with planning out your day. Although your plans won’t always work out exactly as you made them, know what you’re going to be doing and when is perfect for making sure things get done even if you don’t go into an office. Without a plan it is easy to procrastinate and put things off, which makes jobs even bigger to do and even more time-consuming.
Swap Skills
Although it is tempting to try and do everything yourself, this often isn’t possible. Speak to friends about what skills they have or join Facebook groups for local businesses. You probably have tasks that you can do with your eyes closed that other people agonise over for hours and vice versa. By taking part in skill swaps you get small jobs done and ticked off your list. By joining local business groups that support this you also get to interact and network with other businesses, so it’s a win-win.
Pay For Help
Swapping skills is all well and good but sometimes you need expertise or long term help that isn’t available in such a way. Although you might want to avoid spending out money it is worth considering what you’re going to gain by hiring help. For example, hiring a virtual assistant to take care of your social media for you. Yes, the initial outlay might be one you wish to avoid but if they work on your social channels and grow them quicker than you’re able to, isn’t that worth doing? It is about working out what is worth spending out on and what your business will benefit from the most.
Although it can be tempting to put your heart and soul into creating a new business, it is worth remembering that you can’t pour from an empty cup. Investing in yourself and making sure that not every second of your time is taken up with business will leave you in a much better position to dedicate the time you have to your business and that’s a good thing for everyone.
